APPLYING TO THE HIT PROGRAM

1. Information Sessions

In order to learn more about the Health Information Management (HIM) program, including specific entrance requirements and general career information, it is highly recommended that students attend a program information session. Dates, times and locations for upcoming information sessions will be listed on the Shasta College website. Reservations are not required.

2. Cost of Program

The estimated cost of program attendance may be found on the Shasta College website.

In addition to tuition and course fees, program costs may include background/drug screening fees, physical exam, and immunizations. There may be parking and transportation expenditures to and from a clinical site.

3. Financial Aid

Students seeking Financial Aid should contact the Shasta College Financial Aid Office at (530) 242-7700.

4. Entrance Requirements

To be eligible to enroll in the baccalaureate degree program in Health Information Management, applicants must have graduated with an Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology from a regionally accredited institution.

Students accepted into the HIM Program should make sure that they have met the upper-division General Education prerequisites prior to entry into the program.

It is also strongly recommended that students from other colleges who are planning to enter Shasta College’s HIM program in their junior year and have not satisfied the lower-division CSU or IGETC general education requirements, do so prior to entry into Shasta College’s HIM Program.

5. Application

In addition to completing a Shasta College Applicaiton for Admission, students applying to the HIM Program must complete a Program Application Packet. The directions for applying to the HIM baccalaureate degree program may be found on the Shasta College website. The application packet includes the following components:

  • Shasta College Application for Admission
  • Health Information Management Program Application
  • Statement of Interest
  • Official Transcripts
As enrollment spaces are determined, applicants scheduled for enrollment will receive an Enrollment Invitation email. The email will provide instructions for providing a response to the invitation by an established deadline.

If an applicant, when offered enrollment, is not able able to attend, they will be removed from the applicant pool and the applicant will need to re-apply to be considered for a subsequent class. Students who are not selected for the cohort have the option of re-applying during a subsequent semester.

6. Background Check/Drug Screen

The HIM program requires clinical practice at one of Shasta College’s clinical affiliates, which require clearance of student background checks and drug screens. A student whose background and drug screen are not cleared by the clinical affiliate will no longer be eligible for program continuance. Students who are denied at one clinical site are not placed at other clinical sites. Therefore, it is advised that the student address and resolve any background/public record issue before applying to the program.
