Dental Assisting

Shasta College has successfully prepared qualified dental hygiene graduates for employment in the dental  profession since the year 2000 and we are excited to announce the intention to develop a Dental Assisting Certificate Program. The Dental Assisting Program is still in the refinement phase, seeking accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and the Dental Board of California (CDA). The program is intended to be a Certificate Degree program offering a hybridized format to enhance accessibility for rural populations and increase pathways for education. The program is designed to prepare graduates to meet the requirements to practice as a dental assistant, is competency-based, and provides sequential learning experiences progressing from theoretical and laboratory instruction to clinical patient treatment in a functioning dental office.

The Dental Assisting Program is a total of 26 credit-hours that may be completed in two semesters (one year). Included within the professional courses are outside rotational clinical experiences. Students will complete theory classes online and attend lab classes on campus or at an off-site facility. Graduation from the program qualifies the student for the Dental Assisting National Board Examination (DANB), the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examinations, application for a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) license, as well as application for state radiation certification and coronal polishing and pit and fissure sealant certifications. Graduates will be eligible for employment in the high-demand career of dentistry in private dental and specialty practices, federal or state dental programs/clinics, dental schools, and hospitals.

If you are interested in the program, or would like to be added to an interest list to receive updates as program information becomes available, please complete the Dental Assisting Certificate Program Interest List form. We will notify you via email when additional program information becomes available. Please note, this is NOT a wait list for the program, only a list for individuals interested in career training in dental assisting, and who would like additional information as it becomes available. This list will in NO way determine your position in the program, nor will it give you priority registration.
