STUDENT HANDBOOK
General Student Issues

Student Communication
Students must maintain a current telephone number and address with their clinical instructors and the Health Sciences and University Programs office.  A class phone list is given to each student.

Nursing class bulletin boards are located in the hall.  Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) communications, course communications, and other notices will be posted on these boards.  A class meeting will be held monthly to discuss the needs or concerns of the class. Each semester a student representative will be elected by the class. Student representative duties include attendance at monthly Nursing faculty meetings, leading class meetings, communicating class concerns and needs to the faculty, and communicating the faculty response back to the students. Students are also encouraged to individually communicate with appropriate faculty as the need arises.

Parking
Students must park in student parking areas designated by the college. (See “Parking and Traffic Regulation Excerpts” received with course registration.) Parking at clinical facilities will be delineated at clinical orientations. Parking for the Health Sciences and University Programs falls under City of Redding regulations. Please only park in areas designated for public parking.

The college insurance does not cover injury involving a vehicle driven to and from the clinical setting.

Children on Campus
Children are not allowed in clinical skills lab, classroom, or clinical settings.  Students are expected to arrange for appropriate child care.

Cell Phones/Pager
Cell phones/pagers are to be left on silent mode in the classroom. Cell phones should not be answered during class. If there is an emergency requiring answering of a cell phone, the student will be required to leave the classroom and will be allowed to reenter at the conclusion of the next scheduled break.  Some Hospitals and/or Agency policies do not allow the use of personal cell phones or pagers in the facility or in some units. Not following the policies of the agency may result in your removal from the educational area.  At agencies that do allow cell phones and pagers, they should not be answered in a patient room.

School/Clinical Cancellation
Each clinical group will develop a telephone tree in order to facilitate the communication to everyone in the event of a change or cancellation of clinical activities. The instructor will call the first person on the clinical rotation schedule. That person will call the next person listed and so on. If the next person does not personally answer the telephone, the student should call the next person so that the message reaches the other students.

On occasion school is cancelled due to weather conditions. Currently the college announces cancellations on local radio stations. If the instructor is notified of the cancellation, the student will be contacted. In some instances, the student will have to determine on their own whether it is safe to travel to the clinical area. If the college is closed mid-shift the remainder of clinical will be cancelled.
