Women’s Basketball Outlook 2014-2015
The Lady Knights are coming off a 3rd place finish in the Golden Valley Conference and will look to contend for the GVC Championship this year! It will not be easy however, as the team must find a way to replace three starting players this season. One of those starting players is Dyan Tomfohr (Tommy), who was abruptly taken out of contention when she was given the news that her battle is against stage four brain cancer at this moment in her life. We are all keeping Dyan in our prayers. So, stepping up to lead this year’s Lady Knights will be five sophomores and seven freshmen. Head Coach Jerry Brown feels that this group of young players will only get better as the returning sophomores and incoming freshmen spend time together on the court. Coach Brown also feels that having a tough early season schedule will only accelerate that process.
The Lady Knight’s back court has four sophomores: Ashley Rothmann, who was named first team All-GVC and also named to the All-Freshman Team. Coach Brown feels that Ashley should be one of the top guards in Northern California this year. Tia Cunningham, who was a part-time starter last year, will be expected to play a big roll on this year’s team. Marisa Vinson, who was the back-up point guard last year, is competing for a starting spot at the two-guard this year. Tiffany Rhoades comes back home to Redding after spending a year at Yuba College. Joining in the back will be two freshman, Rachel Silva and Emily Tiedman. Silva is from Corning High School, where she helped lead her team to the North Section Championship game. She was also named to the Lions All-Star Team. Tiedeman, from U-Prep, helped lead her team into the Play-offs while also being named to the Lions All-Star Team.
The Lady Knights have one returning player in the Front Court: Merritt Schoenhofer. Schoenhofer was named First-Team All-GVC while also being named to the All-Freshmen Team. She will play multiple positions this year for the Knights and, without question, will be one of the top players in Northern California. Joining her in the front court will be Baylee Toney from Phoenix, Oregon. Baylee led her high school team in scoring and rebounding and was named to two different All-Star teams. Danielle Nichols comes to the Knights from Foothill High School where she was named to the Lions All-Star team. Katie Wingert joins the Knights from Hayfork High School. Wingert was out with a severe ankle injury most of her senior year but has recovered nicely. Our second player from Phoenix, Oregon is Erika Marshall, who was a two-year Varsity starter. Amanda Webb, from Shasta High School, will join the Lady Knights when she completes her season of playing on the Shasta College Volleyball Team. Looking forward to a great season!
