Head Tennis Coach Frank Gutierrez will be entering his 29th season as coach for the Knights. It’s been a great journey through the years! The past year he had an unexpected heart attack and required a four-way bypass surgery. The surgery was successful and coach is back in action and looking forward to the upcoming 2013 season.
Prior to coaching at Shasta College, Coach Gutierrez was the teaching pro at the local tennis club in Redding for 16 years as well as part owner for a period of time. Many of the young players he taught during those years at the club ended up competing at Shasta College. Most notable were Todd Stanley and Chris Gerety. Todd, a Shasta High graduate, was the 1985 California State Singles Jr. College Champion while competing for Shasta College. During that era, Todd and Chris Gerety (an Enterprise grad) formed one of the top doubles teams in the state while competing for the Knights. There have been numerous athletes that have qualified for the State Championships under Coach Gutierrez. Under his direction, the junior program at the tennis club was one of the most active and successful programs in northern California.
Coach Gutierrez is extremely proud of his daughter, Elena, and son, Gabriel, who are both excelling in their academics. Elena completed her master’s degree and is working on her dissertation in Industrial Organizational Psychology. Gabriel will complete his 2nd year at Shasta College and move on to the University Of California system.
