The Dental Hygiene Program is a two-year Associate of Science Degree program of full-time classroom and clinical instruction. The Program will admit a maximum of 16 students per year with preference going to applicants from twelve Northern California counties.
The educational objective of the Associate of Science Degree Dental Hygiene Program is to prepare the student who, upon graduation and successful completion of the National Board Examination and the California State Board Examination, will be able to function within the scope of dental hygiene as defined by the State of California Dental Hygiene Practice Act. This graduated entry-level dental hygienist will then serve the diverse community of Northern California. The Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association accredits the Dental Hygiene Program.
Program Objectives
To prepare the dental hygiene student for gainful employment providing oral health care to the diverse community within the nine county regions of Northern California, utilizing the highest professional knowledge, judgment, and ability.
- To prepare the dental hygiene student with the ability to apply the scientific and theoretical principles that are relevant to dental hygiene practice.
- To prepare the dental hygiene student to perform routine dental hygiene procedures, advanced non-surgical periodontal therapy procedures, delivery of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation, and other functions which are legally specified by the Dental Board of California.
- To prepare the dental hygiene student with the ability to demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning, self-evaluation, and contribution to the changing health needs of society.

Students, at their expense, are required to have a physical examination and immunizations prior to entering the Dental Hygiene program. Students must meet established physical criteria to participate in the clinical area and have a current Basic Life Support--Health Care Provider card (two-person rescue and infant resuscitation). Students must also comply with drug testing and background clearance requirements for clinical placement.
