Shasta College To Award $1.8M In CARES Money To Students

As part of the national CARES Act, Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, Shasta College will be distributing over $1.8M in funds to over 2,700 eligible students starting May 29. Qualified students will be receiving an email notifying them that they will be receiving these emergency grant funds to help cover “Cost of Attendance expenses” related to the disruption of campus operations due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Cost of Attendance expenses includes food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care.

Shasta College used the eligibility found on the federal Department of Education website’s FAQ at https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/heerfstudentfaqs.pdf as the guidelines in determining which students would receive these funds. The following students met those criteria:

  • Students who had filed a 2019-20 FAFSA and had fully completed their financial aid file (e.g., completed any required verification documentation)
  • Students whose FAFSA information demonstrated that the student had any amount of financial need
  • Students enrolled in at least 3 units at the end of the spring 2020 term
  • Students who were already registered in fully online classes on/before March 13, 2020 (the date the President declared a national emergency) were not included, per Department of Education guidance

Distribution of the funds will be electronically disbursed through Shasta College’s partnership with BankMobile, which disburses financial aid funds to Shasta College students currently. Details on eligibility and disbursement may be found on the FAQ page at CARES Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund FAQ for Students (PDF).
