COVID-19 and Veterans Education Benefits,
Admissions & Records and Financial Aid

Dear Students,
Please know that we are working diligently to support you during this time, and ensure your veterans benefit information and financial aid continues to get to you. We are committed and prepared to support you remotely during the Shelter-In-Place order.  Please be patient – we will respond! Below are answers to some anticipated questions:
Spring 2020 Campus Closure/Course Changes

VA Education Benefits: 
If you are utilizing VA education benefits, you should not see any impact to your spring 2020 semester MHA payments, at this time. If you have not submitted a Request for Certification, please complete and submit online HERE.    
VA Education Service is preparing guidance for schools that have changes in training modalities and operation statuses due to COVID 19.   Updates will be posted here and emailed to GI Bill® beneficiaries once we receive guidance from VA.   
Important Updates from VA
President Trump Signed New Legislation due to COVID-19.
Student Veterans will continue to receive their GI Bill benefits under S. 3503, which President Trump signed into law March 21.
The law enables VA to continue providing the same level of education benefits to students having to take courses online due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
The law gives VA temporary authority to continue GI Bill payments uninterrupted in the event of national emergencies. This allows for continued payment of benefits even if the program has changed from resident training to online training.
Thanks to the law, GI Bill students will continue receiving the same monthly housing allowance (MHA) payments they received for resident training until Dec. 21, or until the school resumes in-person classes.
In the wake of COVID-19, thousands of students nationwide have been converted to distance learning as many educational institutions are transitioning to technology-based lesson delivery.
“I commend President Trump and Congress for their work on this important law,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “It will give Veteran students certainty as they continue their education.”
Students receiving GI Bill benefits are not required to take any action. Benefits will continue automatically. VA will work closely with schools to ensure accurately certified enrollments and timely processing.
Update from the VA Debt Management Center (DMC):
We want our partners working with Veterans and their families to be aware that if COVID-19 is affecting someone’s ability to repay their debt with the DMC, they can reach out to the DMC to request assistance.  Please feel free to share this message widely within your organization.

If you are affected by the COVID-19 (CORONA VIRUS), have a VBA benefit debt and need temporary financial relief, please contact DMC at 1-800-827-0648 to request assistance.

Regular disbursements of financial aid (grants and loans): These will continue according to our published disbursement schedule as closely as possible.  Due to unforeseen difficulties or staffing issues, there may be a slight delay, but we will do everything in our power to keep to the schedule.
California College Promise Grant (CCPG – formerly called “The BOG” fee waiver) for Summer and Fall 2020 and Spring 2021
We have posted CCPG fee waivers to your 2020-21 financial aid award letter if you were deemed eligible from the FAFSA, CA DREAM Act, and the online CCPG application.  Students will NOT be dropped for non-payment of the campus/health center fees ($34.50 for summer, $41.50 for fall).

If you haven’t yet applied for financial aid for 2020-21, please do so:

2020-2021 FAFSA Award Letters: 
Our goal was to have that information to you the week of March 16th.  Due to campus closures, these will be delayed approximately two weeks. We apologize for the delay, but we have insured that the CCPG has been posted to your award letter so that you can move forward with summer registration. 
Summer registration: 
Summer registration will continue to take place starting March 17th (please login to MyShasta to see when your registration day/time begins).  
·         From March 17 – 29, registration can only be done online via MyShasta.

Payment of Fees:
 Fees can be paid online via MyShasta. Due to the Shelter-In-Place order, payments cannot be made in person. Students will NOT be dropped for non-payment of the campus/health center fees ($34.50 for summer, $41.50 for fall).
Scholarship awards for Spring 2020: We are continuing to process scholarships awards for Spring 2020.​
Scholarship processing for 2020-21: Normally, scholarship awards are finalized by mid-May.  We will insure that scholarship decisions are made by mid-June. Our scholarship reviewers are largely faculty, and we want their focus to be on their courses, especially those classes that are moving online.
Extraordinary circumstances: The Shasta College Library has put together a resource guide which includes information about a laptop/tablet lending opportunity, where to get free internet, access to food, emergency housing, and links to employment benefits if your work hours have been reduced/eliminated or you have to stay home with an underage child.  More details are available through the Shasta College library website at:  https://libguides.shastacollege.edu/support.
