Do you still need this?

You must go through the assessment process if you have never taken a math class at Shasta College AND:

  • You want to take a course that has a prerequisite, but you can’t provide a transcript that shows you earned a C or higher in the prerequisite course, OR
  • You are not sure which math class is right for you
  • If you wish to be eligible for priority registration

The Shasta College Math Self-Assessment process is optional if:

  • You want to take a course that has a prerequisite, AND
  • You have a transcript that shows you earned a C or higher in the prerequisite course. In this case, you should see a counselor to help you determine which math class to take.

If you have taken a math class at Shasta College and earned a grade in that class, you are not eligible to take the Shasta College Math Self-Assessment. If you received a C or higher in that math class, you are eligible to take the next math class in the sequence of math courses. If you received a D or F, you should consider retaking the class you received the D or F in, or taking a lower class. In this case, you should see a counselor to help you make your decision.

Note: Once you enroll in a Shasta College math class, all other math classes taken will require that you satisfy the prerequisite. For example, if you self-place into Math 101 and pass with a C or higher, you will then be eligible to enroll in Math 102. If you get a D or F in Math 101, you will need to repeat Math 101 or take a lower course.

The responsibility for Self-Placement into a math class lies solely with the student making the placement. Shasta College faculty or staff are not responsible for misplacement of a student into a math class. With this in mind, students should think carefully about their selection before submitting the form at the end of this assessment (Step 6).
