Certainly the most powerful component of the Upward Bound Program is the summer program. Every summer Upward Bound participants have the opportunity to live on the Shasta College campus. The summer program is designed to stimulate the college experience to provide insight of what college life is like. This allows students to see what it is like to live in the dorms, eat in the Shasta College cafeteria, have a roommate, and attend classes in the Shasta College facilities. The summer program also gives parents a chance to experience what it will be like if and when their student moves away to college.
During the summer, students participate in college preparatory activities, academic enrichment course work, mentorship activities, college admissions workshops, and motivational workshops.
Upward Bound students have the opportunity to take academic preparation courses in Science, Math, Writing, and a Foreign Language, all of which are designed to give them a head start in school for the following school year. Students learn to adopt effective study habits that will follow them throughout their high school career and beyond.
In addition to academic instruction, students also participate in college tours and multi-cultural events.
