2009-2010 Outlook

The Shasta College 2009-10 Men’s Basketball program will be returning five (5) players from last years team.  Included are two (2) red-shirts and introducing ten (10) new faces.  Though a high number of new talents, Coach Fitzhugh is positively optimistic about the season.  “We have a nice balance of skilled athletes combined with smart basketball players, which is tied together with unselfish attitudes and a willingness to compete.”

The Knights will not be a tall menacing team.  Their tallest player is Matt Fogarty (6’7/ forward) returning from an All-Conference honorable mention 2008-09 season. Matt will get assistance in the post area from new comers; Kevin Loustale (6’6/ forward), a standout from Chico High School, and transfer Mike Dafter (6’6/ forward).

In the guard position is sharp shooting Tyler Kingdon (6’1), also, an All-Conference honorable mention player in 2008-09, who will be returning to give experience to the Knights back-court.  In 2008-09 Tyler shot 40% from the three point arc, despite being shadowed by the opponents’ best defender during conference play.  Helping to alleviate pressure from Tyler will be several back-court players; Ty Houghton (6’1/Guard) a red-shirt transfer and a standout prep player from Enterprise HS and Derek Evans (6’0/ guard). Ty and Derek will provide shooting, ball handling and athleticism to the back-court.  Track athlete, Derek Evans decided to play basketball this year.  Derek is a welcome surprise.  A talented athlete that has good basketball instincts will provide leadership and competitiveness to the squad.  .  The Knights are looking for their leadership to guide them to a successful season. Other guards that will be competing for game time are Carson Mack (6’0/ guard), and Aaron Meeks (5’9/ guard).  Carson possesses good court vision and sneaky passing skills, that combined will his ability to shoot the three-point shot will help provide another offensive threat.  Aarons’ high school coach is a former player for Coach Fitzhugh, Jon Hienz. Aaron is an intense player with an attention to details.  He is highly coachable allowing himself to improve at a rapid pace.  He will bring leadership and stability to the line-up.  Carson and Aaron have the potential to develop into impact contributors for the Knights.

Helping in the shooting category will be Jacob Gray (6’2/swing), another Enterprise HS standout, and Cody Gedrose (6’1/guard).   Jacob has transferred back from DeAnza College where he red-shirted last season due to back problems.  Cody, a Yreka HS graduate, is returning to the game after sitting out the last couple of seasons.  Both players will be knocking off the rust from their shooting arms, but when they do, look for them to have an impact from the three-point arch and beyond.

The other five (5) players rounding out the roster all have unique attributes to add to the Knights. Vince Mayle (6’3/Swing) is a raw, talented athlete that could bring the crowd to their feet.  A strong athlete that can shoot the three-pointer, finish a drive and come from no where to block shots will make his presence known on the court.  As he learns and gains experience expect some good things from Vince.  Nyjel Buchanan (6’3/swing), another Enterprise HS graduate, is a deceivingly good athlete that also has the knack of blocking shots on defensive.  He is a good passer and a threat from the three-point line.  With time, strength and confidence, Nyjel could turn into a key player.  Cole Lesley (6’3/swing), Del Norte graduate, has good basketball instincts and with time could develop into a very good basketball player.  Pablo Vasquez might be the hardest working individual on the team.  A great teammate and an aggressive competitor, Pablo will add intensity to the Knights line-up.  Last, but definitely not least, Kyle Shreeve (6’0/ Guard) returns to the Knights’ active roster after taking the season off while he healed from stress factures in both lower legs.  Kyle is a defensive spark plug and a surprisingly good rebounder that will add intensity and experience to the line-up.

Coach Fitzhugh feels this team possesses the kind of unselfish character and competitive attitude that could develop into a team that fans enjoy watching.  He is very excited about the potential of this team.
