Geographic information systems (GIS), and related geospatial technologies such as global positioning systems (GPS), are an increasingly common part of our daily lives and are essential to many businesses and agencies in the North State. While many people have been exposed to GPS navigation systems such as Google Earth, MapQuest, and other consumer applications of these technologies, their broader application and utility is less well known. GIS Day 2009 is an opportunity for the community to learn about the many applications of GIS in government and private industry, and also to get hands-on practice in the use of GIS technology for map creation, exploration and just plain fun. A map gallery will include projects by GIS professionals in a range of fields and maps produced by students from Shasta College’s GIS Program. Guest speakers and presentations will address a range of topics.
This event will be on Wednesday, November 18, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Redding Library (1100 Parkview Ave.) Community Room and Computer Lab. This event is sponsored by the Shasta College GIS Program, the City of Redding, the County of Shasta, and ENPLAN. There is no cost to attend this event.
