Accessibility and Accommodation

Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) is committed to establishing equal access and supporting both faculty and students at Shasta College regardless of whether instruction takes place at one of its many campuses throughout the Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District or through Internet based or Interactive Television (ITV) classes.  Working with students to evaluate the educational impact of their disability, DSPS coordinates accommodations and services with faculty and staff to facilitate a student’s ability to reach his/her optimal level of achievement.

Making a class accessible can often be achieved by providing resources and supports so that a student with disabilities can still meet performance expectations with reasonable accommodations.  Accessibility can also be achieved by effective design of the course.  Fortunately, for Shasta faculty using the LMS (ANGEL) for Internet-based instruction, many of the accessibility design features are already integrated with the platform.

A number of resources have also been created to assist faculty in the development and delivery of classes.  While many of the resources listed below are identified because of their relevance to technology mediated instruction, faculty have easily adopted the material for traditional face-to-face classes as well.   Special thanks to the High Tech Center Training Unit (HTCTU) of the California Community Colleges and WebAIM for sharing many of the resources listed below.

Accessibility and Accommodation  , a PowerPoint presentation by Sandra Hamilton Slane, Director of DSPS (Fall 2009).

ANGEL Accessibility User Overview , a valuable resource developed by ANGEL Learning, Inc. for designing an Internet based (fully online, hybrid, or web enhanced) course.

LBCC Dare to Care , an extraordinary online simulative training on ADA/508 compliance developed by Long Beach City College.  LBCC provides free access to Shasta College faculty for the training.  Once the brief training modules are completed, faculty receive a certificate of completion.  Please forward a copy of the certificate to Shasta’s Dean of Extended Education for inclusion in your online training record.
