Egypt Initiative – A Cultural Presentation Presentation
Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 pm, Room 802

The Shasta College Office of the Dean of Students announces a unique cultural event. On Wednesday, September 23 at 7 pm. in room 802 on the main campus, there will be a presentation on the Community College Initiative for Egypt, which has brought 14 Egyptian students to study at Shasta College for one year. The Egyptian students will be comparing their life in Egypt to what they have experienced so far in the US. They will also share aspects of Egyptian culture that display the richness from thousands of years of history and a mixture of modern influences.

The Egyptian Initiative program provides academic instruction in selected fields including tourism and hospitality, welding, information technology, and business management and administration, while also immersing the students in U.S. society and cultural life. Participants are recruited from historically underserved populations and may not have had opportunities for formal job training or higher education. Most participants are in their early- to mid-twenties and many already have work experience. Since the program’s inception, nearly 400 students have benefited from study at host institutions across the United States.

As a special component of the Community College Initiative Program, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, is providing support to young Egyptian men and women to develop professional skills and enhance their leadership abilities at U.S. community colleges. The program also provides Egyptian participants with opportunities to improve their understanding of U.S. culture and society. Community Colleges for International Development (CCID) a nationwide consortium of community colleges, received the grant to administer the Community College Initiatives.

The 14 Egyptian students have joined the other 45 international students in the Shasta College campus community, as the college now has foreign students from countries including Canada, India, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Latvia, Lebanon, Morocco, Norway, and Vietnam. These students bring the world to our community, and their contributions add to the international awareness of our local students, preparing hem to better understand the interrelation of countries in our contemporary world.
