Community Teaching Garden at Shasta College

PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR A PRINTABLE VERSION OF THE SPONSORSHIP INFORMATION BELOW

Dear Community Member:

You have a special opportunity to be part of a unique pioneer Community Teaching Garden, a site for workshops in sustainable and organic gardening practices. The Garden will serve as a learning site for people interested in backyard, neighborhood and school gardening, and small-scale farming and ranching. Local experts will lead many workshops each year. Outside organizations may arrange for workshops as well. While these workshops will benefit some 400 individuals, the ripple effect will have a dramatic impact in the accessibility of locally grown, healthy foods.

In 2009, the Community Teaching Garden Committee arranged for the following: fiscal sponsorship and seed funding from the Shasta College Foundation; designation by Shasta College of 1.5 acres of prime agricultural land for the Garden; donation of organic seed by Shasta Regional Seed Cooperative; a brochure and website; a 3-year growth plan and budget; a grant from the Shasta Regional Community Foundation (McConnell Leadership Grant); and agreements with organizations for volunteer assistance. Actual site development began in Fall 2009 with analyzing soil mineral content, planting cover crops, beginning organic registration process, and preparing land for fencing.

Immediate activities for 2010 are installing fencing and irrigation systems. Hands-on workshops will lay out the initial garden areas, start composting, and practice various planting and irrigation techniques. Therapeutic and personal enrichment benefits of gardening and cooking workshops will also be offered. A long-range sustainability plan includes the sale of garden kits, harvested seed and other produce and products from the garden with surplus produce donated to local food banks.
