Why maintain a hazardous materials inventory?

Multiple regulatory agencies require businesses to maintain a hazmat inventory. As an example, Cal/OSHA's Hazard Communication regulations require that businesses maintain a list of all hazmats handled in the workplace. These lists serve, among other purposes, as a checklist to ensure that all hazmats in the workplace have SDS/MSDSs and are properly labeled.

Also, to meet the requirements of the Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP), Shasta College must maintain a list of the hazmats that are handled in "reportable quantities".

These lists are maintained at Shasta College's Hazardous Materials Compliance Program.

  • SDS - Safety Data Sheet
  • MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheet (soon to be obsolete)
  • "Reportable Quantities" - More than 500-lbs of solid, 55-gals. of liquid, or 200-cu. ft. of gas (at standard temperature and pressure)

What materials must be inventoried?

Any substance that is used by an employee in the workplace as part of his/her work and:

  • That is sold in a container with a label that contains a hazard warning. -OR-
  • Whose manufacture makes an SDS/MSDS available for the product. -OR-
  • That lists on its label (or is otherwise known to contain) an ingredient in the quantity of 0.1% or more of a substance that appears on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "List of Lists" or that has a CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service Registry) number (e.g.:7440-23-5)
  • EPA Consolidated List of List - June 2019 Version (EPS Website)
