Shasta College Awarded $1.2 Million To Expand Dual Enrollment and Distant Learning Course Offerings

REDDING, CA  – Shasta College has been awarded a $1,276,639 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education to expand dual enrollment course offerings through partnerships with local high school districts. The college was one of only four colleges in California and one of 62 colleges throughout the nation to receive an award. As a result of this grant, Shasta College will work with local high schools to create a more seamless transition from high school to college through improved technology and student support services. Funded by the Institutional Resilience and Expanded Postsecondary Opportunity (IREPO) Grants Program, offered under the CARES Act and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, this two-year grant will help Shasta College and the other grantees to resume operations both in-person and remotely.

One of the technology improvements planned through the IREPO grant will be to implement and train high schools to use Canvas, the online learning management system utilized by Shasta College, and many other colleges across California and the nation. By standardizing a common learning platform between the high schools and the college, students will benefit by an increased familiarity and competence with this online learning software as they transition to college. Other technology enhancements will be; specialized software for math and chemistry for online learning and training for teachers in effective online instruction and course delivery.

High School students served by this grant will also benefit from having a dedicated counselor present at their high school who will provide students with clear education to career pathways through completing a degree or certificate. Other Student Services will include Timely MD online 24/7 mental and physical telehealth services for S.C. students.

As part of this grant, Shasta College will expand partnerships with several area high school districts, including: Fall River Unified School District, Central Valley High School, Red Bluff High School, Corning High School, Los Molinos High School, and Trinity High School with strategic enhancements to dual enrollment and distance learning in far northern California.
