Academic Probation

Academic Probation – Semester 1 

Academic probation occurs after a student has attempted at least 12 units at Shasta College and has earned below a 2.0 cumulative GPA.  

Academic Probation – Semester 2 

Should a student on academic probation enroll in the next semester, one of two outcomes may occur at the end of the second semester:

Possible Outcome 1: The student’s semester and cumulative GPA meets or exceeds a 2.0.
Result: The student regains good standing.

Possible Outcome 2: The student’s cumulative GPA is less than a 2.0.
Result: The student’s probation is continued for a second semester. A student on academic probation for two consecutive terms will lose priority registration. Foster youth are exempt from this policy. Beginning fall 2016, students will also lose BOG fee waiver eligibility.

Academic Probation – Semester 3

Should a student on academic probation enroll in a third consecutive semester, one of three outcomes may occur at the end of the third semester:

Possible Outcome 1: The student’s semester and cumulative GPA meets or exceeds a 2.0.
Result: The student regains good standing.

Possible Outcome 2: The student’s semester GPA meets or exceeds a 2.0; but cumulative GPA remains below a 2.0.
Result: The student remains on academic probation for an additional semester, since the student is making progress. This is known as an “extension of probation”.

Possible Outcome 3: The student’s semester and cumulative GPA are below a 2.0 for a third consecutive semester.
Result: Being unable to meet the college’s minimum academic standards is a serious matter. In this case, the student will be dismissed from the college and required to sit out for the subsequent semester (fall or spring). If the student wishes to return, the student will be required to complete the reinstatement process.

Notification of Probation Status

A student on any level of academic and/or progress probation will be notified via email after final grades are posted. The email will inform the student of probationary status and the necessary steps to take.
