Appeals and Professional Judgements

2025-26 appeals will be accepted until May 1, 2026

If your household’s income has significantly changed from the income reported on your FAFSA or CADAA, you may request a review of your financial aid eligibility based on current income.

Supporting documentation is required. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Tax returns, tax transcripts or W-2’s.
  • Year-to-date pay stubs or Bank Statements.
  • Receipts of unusual or unexpected expenses.

To submit your SAI Appeal:

  1. Login to Student Forms
  2. Select “Manage Requests”
  3. Choose "Professional Judgment: Special Circumstance - SAI Appeal”

If FAFSA determined you are a dependent student, but unusual circumstances prevent you from contacting your parents, or if contacting your parents poses a risk to you, you may request a dependency override.

Self-sufficiency or parental refusal to provide information are not valid reasons for a dependency appeal.

Examples of unusual circumstances:

  • Abusive or unsafe home environment.
  • Parental abandonment or estrangement.
  • Have refugee or asylee status and are separated from their parents.
  • Parents are displaced in another country.
  • Student or parents are currently incarcerated.

Supporting documentation is required. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Police court, or social services reports.
  • Letters from counselors, teachers, or others familiar with your situation.

To submit your Dependency Appeal:

  1. Login to Student Forms
  2. Select “Manage Requests”
  3. Choose "Professional Judgment: Unusual Circumstance Appeal”

If you were determined ineligible for financial aid because you did not meet one or more of the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards, you can appeal this decision by explaining the extenuating circumstances that affected your academic performance.

To submit your SAP Appeal:

  1. Log in to Student Forms
  2. Select “Manage Requests”
  3. Choose “SAP Appeal"
