History

The MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) program in California has a rich history dating back several decades. MESA is a statewide educational initiative designed to support and enhance the academic achievement of historically underrepresented students in the fields of mathematics, engineering, and science.

The MESA program was first established in the 1970 ‘s at the University of California, Berkeley, by concerned faculty. Driven by the desire to increase diversity in STEM fields and address the underrepresentation of minority students, particularly African Americans, Chicanos/Latinos, and Indigenous peoples, the MESA model developed.

The program aimed to provide academic support, mentoring, and opportunities for hands-on experiences in STEM for pre-college and college students. The model focused on creating a comprehensive system of academic support, including counseling, tutoring, and enrichment activities. MESA quickly gained recognition for its success in increasing the number of underrepresented students pursuing STEM fields.

Over time, the MESA program expanded across California. It established partnerships with K-12 schools, community colleges, and four-year universities to provide a continuum of support for students as they progress through different educational levels. MESA centers were established throughout the state, each offering a range of resources and services tailored to the needs of local communities.

Through its various components, MESA has provided students with opportunities to participate in hands-on projects, science fairs, competitions, industry visits, and mentorship programs. These experiences have helped students develop critical thinking skills, gain exposure to STEM careers, and foster a sense of belonging in the academic community.

The success of the MESA program in California has led to its replication in other states and countries, where it has been adapted to local contexts. It has also expanded to include additional STEM disciplines, such as computer science and technology.

Today, MESA continues to play a significant role in promoting STEM education and diversity in California. It remains committed to its mission of providing educational equity and access to underrepresented students, helping them succeed in STEM disciplines and pursue rewarding careers in these fields.
