About The Farm Dorm
Shasta College maintains a small four room Farm House for up to 8 residents to live and work on the Shasta College Farm.
The Farm Dorm Program is designed for students who want to learn, are responsible, self-motivated, take pride in their work, and can get along well with others.
Farm Dorm students must work at least 14 hours per week, maintain a 2.5 GPA, register for 12 academic units, and be responsible for their monthly duties.
The residents of the Farm Dorm must be able to lift 70 pounds, work with irrigation equipment, livestock, and electric fencing. Use of hand tools, gardening tools, weed eaters, and lawn mowers is also required, as well as repair and maintenance of fencing and other equipment used on the Farm. A valid California driver’s license is required.
Farm weekend duty will be assigned the beginning of each semester. Each semester students will be assigned to work with another Farm Dorm student and be responsible for their assigned duties such as, feeding, irrigation, maintenance of facilities, etc. They must work with their assigned partner and do chores together in a timely manner.
Farm Dorm students will also be responsible for providing assistance during school holidays and vacations. These will be assigned to students on a rotational basis.
Students will gain valuable work experience from hands-on activities, while receiving up to four units of Worksite Learning credit. The maximum duration of residency at the Farm Dorm house is four semesters. You must resubmit an application for each new year. Dorm students will be asked to sign a Farm Dorm Residence Agreement, containing terms and disciplinary actions related to residency expectations. This program not only exposes students to the day-to-day operations and up-keep of an agricultural facility, but also focuses heavily on the development of strong interpersonal skills and positive conflict resolution through communication.
Residents of the Farm Dorm are also granted access to the Residence Halls on campus, including the Commons building. The Commons building provides recreational space and equipment for both indoor and outdoor activities as part of the facility.
A full range of social and recreational activities is programmed monthly for the enjoyment of all on campus residents.
Applications for the Farm Dorm are accepted February – April each year for the incoming academic year. Interviews are held in May every year, with spots being offered to selected applicants following completion of all applicant interviews.
A $200 security deposit is required at the time of acceptance of a position in the Farm Dorm. Payment will be made through the student’s Shasta Portal.
Residents are also required to pay $150.00 each month to contribute to the household supplies and groceries.
