Emergency Medical Services
The Shasta College EMT training program is conducted in accordance with the requirements of the California Code of Regulations, Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 2 and has been approved by Sierra Sacramento Valley EMS (SSVEMS), the Local EMS Agency for Shasta County as defined by the California Health and Safety Code
EMT training program pre-requisite
"CPR for the professional rescuer" or "Healthcare Provider CPR" per the current standards of the American Heart Association; must be 18 years old before the last class session.
Class meetings
Class meets weekly in a four-hour session. Five (5) all day Saturday sessions are scheduled, as well, for the campus classes and the dates will be listed in the schedule. Attendance is required.
Observation time
Ten hours of observation time is required with five documented patient contacts.
Please Note: Students are not allowed into the clinical areas until they have submitted proof of compliance with a standardized background check. This is done at the student's expense.
National Registry of EMT's (NREMT)
The State of California has designated the EMT Certification Exam of the NREMT as the certification exam for California. To qualify to take the NREMT exam, the student must pass the EMT training course and receive a Course Completion Certificate.

In 2006 the state has adopted the National Registry EMT exam as its statewide exam. Below you will see the correct steps in becoming a certified EMT.
- Complete the Shasta College course FAID-75 (Emergency Medical Technician I Basic) and receive a course completion certificate.
- Create a NREMT profile at www.nremt.org
- Apply for your NREMT via www.nremt.org
- Take your NREMT test
- Upon notice that you have passed your NREMT apply to a Local Emergency Medical Services Agency (LEMSA) such as "SSV (Sierra-Sacramento Valley Emergency Medical Services) or NorCal (Northern California Emergency Medical Services)"
- Submit a Live Scan with your SSV or NorCal EMS applications.
On average it takes 7-10 business days to receive your Certification Card once you submit your application, live scan, proof of completion, and pay your fees at a local emergency medical services agency (LEMSA).
