Health Information Technology Program General Information
The Health Information Technology Program consists of the first two years of the program that result in an Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology. The Health Information Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for writing the national examination for certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
Professionals who work in health information technology focus on the technical side (digital formats) of managing health information. They work with software and hardware that stores patient data. These professionals provide support for electronic health records and other systems that Health Information Management professionals use to secure information. While many health information technicians will work in hospitals, they are also employed in other healthcare settings that include office-based physician practices, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, mental health facilities and public health agencies.
Professionals that have RHIT certification provide the following healthcare services:
- Ensure the quality of medical records by verifying completeness, accuracy and proper entry into the appropriate computer systems.
- Assemble and analyze patient data to improve patient care and control costs.
- Specialize in coding diagnosis and procedures in patient records for reimbursement and research.

Accreditation
The HEALTH INFORMATICS accreditor of Shasta College is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for ASSOCIATE degree in HEALTH INFORMATICS has been reaffirmed through 2030.
