The California Government Code (Section 3100) specifies that, after a disaster, Public Employees can be declared as disaster workers and assigned such activities as deemed necessary by their supervisors. The term "Public Employees" applies to all persons employed by the State or any County, City, or Public District. Employees are strongly encouraged to make advanced emergency plans with their families in preparation for disasters so that their attention may be focused on assisting others at the college. It is important that you become thoroughly familiar with the procedures and responsibilities outlined in the plan as well as the locations of various evacuation zones on the campus map. This will help to avoid confusion and ensure a safe and orderly evacuation during an emergency.

    • Identify location

  3. Retrieve the Emergency Bag; put on Vest; set Radio to channel 5.

  5. Immediately lock outside building doors or block doors with furniture.
  6. Call or go to classrooms/labs if safe to do so. Lock inside classroom/lab doors or block doors with furniture.
  7. Advise everyone in classroom/lab to stay inside, remain low, and take cover. This is the safest option.
  8. Wait for instructions from Incident Command Center.

Things to remember

  • Call 911 only when safe to do so
  • When Calling 911: identify Shasta College and your exact location. Remain calm and answer police dispatcher's questions.
  • Instruct students/employees to drop to the ground immediately-face down as flat as possible.

Shasta College Security Evacuation Guidelines

The fire alarm signals evacuation. Other signals to evacuate could include an emergency message over the telephone, instructions from a courier/runner, and/or e-mail. The building emergency coordinator is "in charge" of the evacuation of assigned building and has been trained in building evacuation procedures.

  • When notification to evacuate occurs, inform occupants/students to take direction from the building emergency coordinator, who will be wearing a bright orange vest.
  • Advise occupants/students to take their belongings, leave the building, and go to the site that the building emergency coordinator has determined as a "safe area." Ensure all occupants/students have been accounted for. If possible, lock the office or classroom door when leaving.
  • If there are injuries, wait for emergency personnel. Exercise extreme care when moving injured persons, and only if necessary.
  • The building emergency coordinator will have a radio which communicates directly with the command post. Information regarding the incident will be communicated to the building emergency coordinators, which will be shared with staff and students, including whether classes will resume.
  • DO NOT REENTER the building(s) until cleared by the building emergency coordinator or the "ALL CLEAR" alarm is activated.
  • In a large-scale incident, the services of all staff could be needed to ensure the safety of other staff and students.
