I believed that I had been born into failure and had no realistic chance at a happy, successful life. My family struggled financially. My father and mother were both addicts, so most income went towards their habits. Summers were spent with my grandparents on their farm to work. Although the days were long and challenging, my grandfather instilled in me a drive to work hard to achieve my goals. At 17, I moved out and began working. College seemed like an impossibility to me for many years.

My grandfather continued to be my saving grace. Before he passed from bone cancer, he helped me get my life back on track. My grandfather had been an agricultural professor at Shasta College for many years. Watching him motivate his students and positively impact their lives became the catalyst I needed to enroll at Shasta College. I am now carrying a 4.0 GPA and working as a writing tutor at the Shasta College Learning Center. I have never been more confident in my future. My ultimate plan is to earn my bachelor’s degree and join the JET program to teach English overseas.

For those of you who believe the opportunity for higher education has passed you by, Shasta College will prove you wrong! Everyone here has helped to completely change my perspective of who I am and what I can achieve. Shasta College is the perfect place to rewrite your story with a happier, more successful ending.
