English as a Second Language instruction helps students whose native language is not English succeed in college and at work. To meet the needs of ESL students, Shasta College offers courses in different levels and skill areas. The program provides both language instruction and cultural orientation. Classes are small and comfortable.

Learning a language is never easy! But you don't h​​ave to learn all on your own.

Everyday from 9:00 am-1:00 pm during the summer you can ask a trained ESL tutor to help you understand your readings, as well as plan, edit, and revise your papers. Spanish and French tutoring are also available. Make an appointment or just come to the desk to see if we are free.

Monday- Wednesday from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM during the summer.  Get help with learning English from a tutor or by using special software work on improving your pronunciation and intonation.

Frequent Asked Questions

The COMPASS Test is no longer used for ESL placement. Contact the Testing Center at (530) 242-7751 or Susan Sawyer at (530) 242-2242 for specifics on placement.

You may still be accepted into Shasta College with a TOEFL score between 450 and 500, but you will very likely have to study extra hard and spend many hours in the tutoring center working with ESL tutors. You will have to maintain full-time status (minimum of 12 units) in regular college classes as per the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) regulations.
