What is BIRT?
BIRT: Behavioral Intervention Resource Team
BIRT’s vision is to make our campuses and workplaces safer environments where development, education, and caring intervention are fostered and encouraged.
Whether it is to combat bullying, prevent violence, support individuals with disabilities, empower the success of those suffering from mental health challenges, or assist those who are in crisis, our members are joined in common purpose and exploration of best practices.
Members of Campus Safety, the Student Health & Wellness Office, as well as other college faculty and staff, are actively involved in the Behavioral Intervention Resource Team (BIRT). BIRT assists faculty, staff and administration with identifying interventions that assist stressed or disruptive student situations. Additionally, the BIRT may be of help to faculty and staff with crisis management when there is a suicide or sudden loss in or affecting the college environment.
Outreach is extended to students out of an abundance of care for a student’s well-being as well as the safety and well-being of the campus community as a whole. Students are not required to meet with BIRT staff and BIRT meetings with students are not punitive. However, BIRT may make a referral to Student Conduct or Title IX for behavioral intervention and potential disciplinary action.
