What is Flex?
“Flex” (Flexible Calendar) provides dedicated time for faculty to engage in professional development activities that enhance teaching, learning, and student success.
Flex activities may include attending workshops, participating in campus events, collaborating with colleagues, or completing approved individual projects that support innovation and excellence in teaching.
Full-Time Instructional Faculty
Full-time instructional faculty are required to complete a total of 66 Flex hours each academic year between July 1 and June 30. These hours are divided into three categories:
- Mandatory Flex Days (12 hours):
Attendance is required at two district-scheduled Flex days each year (6 hours per day). - Collaborative Flex (18 hours):
Faculty work together on initiatives related to student learning, assessment, or instructional improvement. - Individual Flex (36 hours):
Faculty select self-directed professional development activities from the approved Flex list or propose new projects with supervisor approval.
Faculty should track completed Individual Flex hours throughout the year and submit a Flex completion form to their department Administrative Professional by June 30. Incomplete hours are deducted from sick leave balances.
Exemptions: Faculty teaching courses with instructional hours that cannot be reduced due to state or agency mandates may be exempt from the 36 individual Flex hours upon documentation.
Full-Time Non-Instructional Faculty
Full-time non-instructional faculty (such as counselors or librarians) do not have a Flex requirement but are encouraged to participate in scheduled Flex activities. Attendance at mandatory Flex days may be approved by supervisors in lieu of regular work assignments.
Part-Time Faculty
Part-time faculty are not required to complete Flex hours but are eligible for paid professional development. Participation is voluntary and must be pre-approved or selected from the college’s list of approved Flex activities.
- Instructional Part-Time Faculty:
Eligible for 1 hour of paid professional development for every 18 hours of instruction taught in the academic year. - Non-Instructional Part-Time Faculty:
Eligible for up to 42 hours per year of paid professional development beyond the scheduled 800 hours of work (prorated accordingly).
These activities are recorded on the designated form (below) and processed through the AVPII office and Human Resources for payment.
