Introduction to Public Speaking

In this course, students learn and apply foundational rhetorical theories and techniques of public speaking in a multicultural democratic society. Students discover, develop, and critically analyze ideas in public discourse through research, reasoning, organization, composition, delivery to a live audience and evaluation of various types of speeches, including informative and persuasive speeches. The purpose of this course is to develop the skills necessary to build and maintain positive communication and relationships across cultures. Students will focus on similarities and differences in communication behaviors. Perceptions, language usage, nonverbal style, thinking modes, and values will be explored within and between members of different ethnic and cultural groups, as well as the appreciation and comparison of communication among diverse groups within the larger context of American culture. This course provides students with the foundational knowledge and practice of speech-making in a democratic society, while simultaneously emphasizing theory and research about communication in a variety of small-group contexts. This course exposes students to rhetorical theory, small group theory, and public speaking fundamentals within the context of their interpersonal interactions, group communication processes, and live presentations (including informative and persuasive speeches). Students will learn historical roots and key rhetorical theories that ground the study and practice of public speaking, and be able to discover, develop, and critically analyze ideas and information in public discourse. Students will also explore and evaluate group communication processes, including problem-solving, conflict management, decision-making and leadership. This course may be offered in a distance education format.

This course introduces students to the field of performance studies through the oral interpretation of various literary genres, including Western and Non-Western literature. The focus is on audience analysis, selection and thematic analysis of literature, script writing, discussion and application of vocal and physiological delivery techniques, program performance, and post-performance evaluation. Theoretical issues and historical developments are examined and applied to the current performance trends in solo, duo, and interpreters' theatre. Argumentation and Debate

Advisory: Completion of a class in public speaking or public speaking experience.

This course presents argumentation theory, including research, methods of analysis, use and tests of evidence, refutation, and the logical and ethical responsibilities of advocacy. Emphasis is placed on the preparation and presentation of cases for and against propositions or points of view through extensive research, essay writing, debate, and public address. Principles are applied in a variety of formal and informal debate situations. Public speaking training and/or experience are recommended for enrollment. This course may be offered in a distance education format.
