The Shasta College theatre program is excited to announce the opening call of auditions for the summer production of The Sound of Music.

This family favorite play and the countless musical scores it features by Rodgers & Hammerstein almost need no introduction. The musical tells the story of Maria Rainer, an irrepressible young postulant at Nonnberg Abbey who is sent to act as governess for seven children of a retired naval officer, Captain von Trapp. Maria brings music and laughter back into the von Trapp household, and audiences are swept up in the ensuing love story. The play is set in Austria during the tumultuous times leading up to WWII, and the struggles and choices such circumstances eventually require.

Auditions will be held on March 27 and 29 at 6:30 pm, in the Shasta College theatre, with callbacks on Sunday, April 2, at 5:00 pm. Community members, especially children ages 5-14, who like to sing and act, and Shasta College students are encouraged to audition.

Participants should prepare a one-minute monologue and the appropriate musical excerpt from the list below. An accompanist will be provided. Performers should expect to sing with piano accompaniment rather than with a prerecorded track.

Rehearsals will be held weeknights starting on June 5th. Performances will run Thursday through Sunday, July 13th through 23rd. (Participants should expect to be called for tech and load-in time on weekends near the run of the show, including July 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th, and 9th.)

The Sound of Music is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. (www.concordtheatricals.com). This Shasta College production is directed by Dr. Greg Thorson, with music direction by Dr. Jeff Specht, and sets by David Fraser.
