Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, including Drones, on Campus
As outlined in Administrative Procedure 3950, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), including drones, are controlled and regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The operation of a UAS, drone, or model aircraft from, on or within 500 feet above any Shasta College campus or any District owned or leased lands, or within District interior building spaces, is prohibited except as approved in advance by the Shasta College Campus Safety Department (SCCSD) by using the form below.
- Safety is of the utmost importance for those on the ground in the area where the aircraft is to be flown.
- The privacy of those in the area where the aircraft is to be flown shall not be infringed. Pilots must not violate the space where unsuspecting inhabitants may be, or where a higher expectation of privacy exists.
Community members, faculty or staff who plan to utilize a drone or small unmanned aircraft system (UAS) are required to obtain authorization prior to the use of the system on or over District owned or leased properties.
Additionally, students using drones as part of a college sponsored course or club that teaches the building or operations of drones must be supervised at all times by a qualified faculty or staff member that has received flight authorization under this policy.
The operation of drones or any UAS by emergency first responders may be exempt from these procedures based on determination of emergency needs.
