In order to protect the health and welfare of each employee and student and to strive towards compliance with state, federal and local regulations, appropriate protective equipment is required in areas where there may be a risk of injury or exposure to hazardous substances or conditions. The information on this page and in the documents linked below will explain the general requirements to protect college employees from various hazards encountered in their work area.

What specific equipment do I need to be aware of in my "area of responsibility" and what are my responsibilities regarding the equipment?

Safety equipment has a broad definition. We will be focusing on the equipment that is required by the HMBP for the purpose of dealing with Hazmat events such as spills, fires, injuries and exposures. The type of fire extinguishers, spill kits, eyewashes and safety showers that are required are determined by, and are specific to, the characteristics of the specific areas that pose a threat to life, health and the environment.

All safety equipment should be accessible, in good working condition and maintained as needed. Making this happen is your responsibility.

The following guides should help you assess your safety equipment in your area and help you determine if it is in compliance with HMBP requirements. More importantly, the guides should help you ensure that the equipment is ready to perform to protect the lives and health of our people.
