The 2nd Annual Ignite Opportunity STEM Career Day will host 1,500 freshman students from Shasta, Trinity, Tehama, Siskiyou, Lassen and Modoc Counties on October 23rd, 2015 from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm at the Shasta District Fairgrounds. Students will engage with professionals from around the North State as they share their experiences and advice on how to succeed in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Math) based businesses. North State STEM, Shasta County Office of Education, Shasta College and Smart Business Resource Center have partnered together to offer this opportunity to these students. There is no cost to attend and event T-shirts and other giveaways will be provided.

The most exciting and challenging jobs of the future lie in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). According to the US Dept. of Commerce: STEM related jobs are growing at a rate of 17 percent in California alone; there is a projected need for a STEM workforce in 2018 of approximately 1.14 million. During the next ten years, over 70% of the predicted jobs in California will be related to STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Math. Businesses, institutions of higher education and other community members from Shasta County and surrounding areas are participating in this event to inspire local students to pursue rewarding STEM career paths.

Students will benefit from this action packed day of:

  • Dynamic, engaging presentations from professionals working in STEM fields right here in the North State
  • Real-world anecdotes and advice about the educational paths to STEM career opportunities in our area and beyond
  • Direct access to and interaction with local professionals and college representatives
  • Materials and information to help them plan and prepare for work, post-secondary education and more!
