Are you taking a math, statistics, or other course that requires math (such as chemistry, physics or engineering), this fall?

If the answer is “Yes”, then Math Camp is for you!

Our main focus, as always, is Foundational Skills. Those skills don’t feel very basic when you don’t know or have forgotten them, and we are here to help you strengthen/rebuild those skills in advance of your fall classes!

We will also be offering review sessions tailored for those entering Calculus 1 and 2, but even most of those students that I’ve spoken with have reported that they could also really use practice with the basics!

So, if you thought Math Camp was only for people who totally get everything math related and are excited about working on really hard problems, that is not the case!

I have heard from many students later in the school year who wished they had attended Math Camp, but were too nervous, because they didn’t know what to expect. That is understandable!

Here’s What to Expect from Math Camp!

  1. Everything You Need is Free: Attendance, materials, parking, lunch and snacks. (For those who attended last year, there was an issue with parking, but the director of Campus Security has recently assured me that parking permits will not be required for student parking spaces during the week of Math Camp.)
  2. You are not graded and nothing goes on your Shasta College record. We do not share information about your Math Camp “performance” with instructors (except me). But if you are planning on taking one of my classes, I will simply be proud of you for using your resources and taking the opportunity to set yourself up for success!
  3. We Always Have Fun! We work hard, but there is always a lot of laughter and silliness; We don’t take ourselves too seriously. It is a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere with no pressure to perform!
  4. We (tutor assistants and myself) do not judge you for what you don’t know. We are excited to give you the opportunity and support to learn more about what you want and need to know!
  5. The students who attend are always kind, supportive and non-judgmental toward each other, and many friendships are formed during Math Camp! I often see students who met at Math Camp studying together throughout the school year.
  6. We will also share many college resources with you that you may not have known about otherwise! We will take a tour of physical locations on campus that can help provide those resources for you and hear from campus leaders about what their organization can do to support you.
  7. The student leaders that I chose to assist with Math Camp are also tutors in our Learning Center and SI leaders or embedded tutors in many STEM subjects, not just math and statistics. They have all had one year of experience with Math Camp and received wonderful (anonymous) reviews from our Math Camp students. Getting to know them at Math Camp will make it less intimidating to seek their help during the upcoming semester!
  8. Here is a brief example of our daily schedule: Students check in and we all meet as a group for morning announcements/games. Then, we have two breakout session times with a 10 minute break between and then take a 45 minute lunch break. After that, there are two more breakout session times with a 10 minute break between. At the end of the day, all students/assistants come together for a short meeting where I share what to expect the next day, have you fill out an anonymous review of your experience, and then we announce our daily prize winners (must be present to win).
  9. There are generally two sessions to choose from per session time. For example, during one session you could perhaps choose “Fraction review” or “Trig function review.” We will give you a booklet at the beginning of the week with all breakout sessions listed so that you can choose which sessions you would like to attend ahead of time.
  10. There are also free snacks/water provided in the hall throughout the day. Lunch is free and provided by the Shasta College cafeteria who deliver it to our building (and it gets great reviews!), but you are certainly welcome to bring your own lunch.
