General Education for Transfer
Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) and California State University General Education (CSU GE) are two commonly used general education patterns used by community college students to assist them with completing lower division general education before transferring.
These two patterns are occasionally accepted by some out-of-state and private schools. However, not every student planning on transferring to a four-year college or university should complete these patterns.
Depending on your major and your intended school of transfer, you may be better off completing a different set of general education courses. Make an appointment to see a Shasta College counselor to discuss the best general education path for you.

Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)
Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a general education program that community college transfer students may use to fulfill lower division general education requirements in either the University of California (UC) or the California State University (CSU) system without the need, after transfer, to take additional lower division general education courses. As part of the requirements for a bachelors degree, all students must meet general education requirements.
The IGETC pattern is most useful for students who want to keep their options open before making a final decision about transferring to a particular UC or CSU campus. Completion of IGETC does not guarantee admission, nor is it required for admission for most campuses.

California State University General Education (CSU GE)
California State University General Education (CSU GE) is a general education program that community college transfer students may use to fulfill lower-division general education requirements for the CSU system without the need, after transfer, to take additional lower division general education courses. As part of the requirements for a bachelor's degree, all students must meet general education requirements.
Completion of CSU GE does not guarantee admission, nor is it required for admission for most campuses.

After Deciding Which Path is Best for You
After you have verified that your school and major of transfer will accept either IGETC or CSU GE, if you decide to not complete the pattern, you will likely be required to satisfy the specific lower division general education requirements of your transfer institution.
It is important that you request that your California Community College certify completion of California Community College coursework that meets IGETC or CSU GE requirements. Certification typically means that the four-year school will accept these courses to meet their lower division general education requirements.
Requests for IGETC and CSU GE certification should be submitted to the Shasta College Admissions and Records Office.
