Jazz is back at Shasta College! After a long hiatus, our evening Big Band is back, under the talented baton of Mr. Zach Gifford. Look for a series of live public concerts throughout the year in our own Shasta College theatre, with the possibility of musical guests to come!

Jazz Big Band (MUS 47)

Traditional jazz big band (18-22 musicians) and is at the advanced level of jazz performance. The Big Band rehearses Monday evenings, and involves both music majors and community members. The ensemble performs traditional literature from the Big Band Era of the 1930’s and 40’s AND contemporary modern jazz literature. This is an advanced ensemble with an audition requirement. For more information, contact Zach Gifford at zgifford@shastacollege.edu.

The History of Jazz and Early Rock (MUS 11)

Shasta College offers a popular General Studies course focused on jazz history (MUS 11: The History of Jazz and Early Rock). Because MUS 11 is a general studies course, all students are welcome into the class (students do NOT initially need to know anything about music). The course satisfies general studies requirements for both the CSU and UC systems. There are multiple sections offered during the daytime academic schedule. For more information, contact Dr. Larry Grandy at lgrandy@shastacollege.edu.
