Noncredit education at Shasta College offers tuition-free classes and certificate programs that help you develop foundational skills, brush up on earlier learning, upskills, and provide a smooth transition to credit programs and employment. Noncredit courses are focused on skill attainment, rather than GPA, and can be repeated any number of times to allow for skill refreshment, career exploration, and lifelong learning.

Many of our noncredit classes have credit course versions that are functionally the same course. For example, ECE 370 (noncredit) and ECE 170 (credit) are both “Understanding Childhood Trauma” and cover the same course content and course objectives.  Some students enroll for ECE 370 as noncredit, and some enroll in ECE 170 to earn one unit, but the instructor is teaching the class to both groups of students at the same time, with the same information and the same assignments. We call these “mirrored” courses.

If you have taken a noncredit course that has a mirrored credit course, and you have a need for the actual course units for professional development or because you have decided you want to pursue a credit-based certificate or associate degree at Shasta College, you can request the credit version of the course added to your transcript through Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).

This process is only available for eligible noncredit courses completed at Shasta College that have a direct equivalent credit course (“mirrored” course). The eligible courses are listed below. To explore Shasta College's full range of noncredit offerings, visit our Noncredit Education webpage.

CPL for noncredit to credit coursework will be approved for students who are currently active Shasta College students and have discussed their specific need for the credit version of the class with a Shasta College Counselor.

How to Request Credit for Noncredit Coursework

To request Credit for Prior Learning based on previously completed noncredit coursework at Shasta College, please follow these steps:

  1. If it has been more than two semesters since you took a course at Shasta College, re-apply to the college.
  2. Meet with your Counselor to discuss your completed noncredit coursework, how the credit version of the course aligns with your educational/career goals, and the potential impact CPL credit may have on your academic or transfer goals.
  3. Complete the Credit for Prior Learning Petition after meeting with your Counselor.
  4. If your noncredit grade was a Pass/No Pass, but the credit version of the course must have a letter grade, you will be assigned the actual grade you earned in the noncredit version of the class (A, B, C, D or F).
  5. You will be notified that your petition has been processed via your Shasta College email. Once the course is posted to your Shasta College transcript, it will have a notation that the credit version was received through Credit for Prior Learning, per local and state policy.

Please Note

If Shasta College awards Credit for Prior Learning coursework and units, they will be used to fulfill your Shasta College graduation requirements. This coursework and associated units will be added to your Shasta College transcript. Financial Aid cannot be used to pay for units earned through CPL.

If you plan to transfer to another institution, please be aware that every college/university has their own policies regarding Credit for Prior Learning. What was accepted at Shasta College may not be accepted at another institution.
