Awarding academic credit for college level learning that takes place outside a college classroom is called “Credit for Prior Learning.  We have been expanding the ways students can earn equivalent Shasta College course credit through Credit for Prior Learning, and military training and experience is highly valued by our campus. Veterans, and current Service members, planning to utilize VA Educational Benefits must provide transcripts for an evaluation of all military educational training and experience for applicability to your current education program.  Potential equivalent course credit is granted based on faculty evaluations and recommendations provided by the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide

Evaluating your military training and experience will require that you request your DD-214 and for most military branches, your Joint Services Transcripts (JST)*. If you were in the Air Force, you will need your DD-214 and your Community College of the Air Force Transcripts.

Information on accessing those documents, and the process for requesting an evaluation for Credit for Prior Learning is on our Credit for Prior Learning webpage.

* JST is an academically accepted document approved by the American Council on Education (ACE) to validate a service member's military occupational experience and training along with the corresponding ACE college credit recommendations.
